TTC INVOLVED IN 18,000 CRASHES IN LAST FIVE YEARS, SAY TRANSIT COMMISSION INVESTIGATORS

Here’s something to think about next time you board a TTC bus or streetcar.  Figures released by the Transit Commission show the TTC has been involved in 18,000 crashes since 2009.  The TTC’s own investigators say 5000 of those were deemed preventable. In addition, one bus driver was involved in 30 crashes in the last five years and 181 drivers have been in 10 collisions or more. TTC Spokesman Brad Ross says each of these crashes is thoroughly investigated.  “We send a supervisor out who writes a full report,” Ross explains to CP24, “it goes back to the division where divisional management then review the report and make a determination on preventable or not preventable.  The police may well charge the TTC operator with a collision after a collision and we would then assign fault to that operator in that particular case.”  He goes on to say the 18,000 number “seems high but the vast majority of these are very very small in nature.”

The city’s buses and streetcars cover about 150-million kilometres a year.  But some Toronto city councillors are expressing concern at the number of drivers racking up double-digit collision figures.  Public Works Committee Chair Denzil Minnan-Wong questions “whether some of those drivers should still be behind the wheel of a TTC vehicle.”
